How to choose sleeping bags for outdoor camping

The sleeping bag is one of the essential pieces of equipment for outdoor travelers. A good sleeping bag can provide a warm and comfortable sleeping environment for backcountry campers. It gives you a quick recovery. Besides, the sleeping bag is also the best "mobile bed" for self-driving, hiking backpackers. But in the face of a variety of sleeping bags on the market, how to choose a sleeping bag?

1. Look at the material

Sleeping bag warmth depends on the thickness of the insulation layer, but can not carry a thick quilt on the mountain, right? So choose a light, warm, comfortable, and easy-to-store sleeping bag, it is very necessary!

Many kinds of artificial fiber, with warm, easy-to-dry, easy-to-clean, not afraid of water characteristics. It follows the simple principle that less heat transfer  means more warmth.

Polyester, or artificial feathers, is larger and heavier when stored. Not easy to carry, especially for backpackers, but relatively cheap.

Down varieties are also many, the weight gap is large, and service life and insulation performance are mostly still guaranteed. The first thing that determines the insulation performance of down is the amount of down. That is, 80%, 85% ...... on the label of the sleeping bag, indicating that the down in the down content of 80% or 85%. Next is the fluffiness. A certain amount of down accounted for by the volume, it is the main factor in determining the thermal performance. The fluffiness and down content of down is the key to warmth.

2. Choose the shape

The sleeping bag is wrapped around the body as an insulation layer in fluffy padding. It can provide an airtight to maintain temperature and prevent body heat loss.

The first selection criteria: completely cover the head! Heat loss from the head accounts for 30% of total body heat loss at 15˚C, and 60% at 4˚C, and the lower the temperature, the higher the percentage! So choose a good "head cover" sleeping bag.

The envelope sleeping bag is shaped like an envelope. It's more square. It makes a difference whether you wear a hat or not. The hatless model is suitable for summer, and the hooded model is wrapped up for autumn and winter.

Advantages: the internal space is larger, easier to turn over, and suitable for sleeping in a bold position or a larger block of people. And most of the zipper is a pass to the end and can be completely opened as a single-layer quilt use.

Disadvantages: internal spaciousness also leads to poor wrapping. So in the same filling specifications, the warmth is not as good as the mummy type.

Mummy sleeping bag: "human" as its name, into the sleeping bag you will be wrapped tightly like an Egyptian pharaoh, like a mummy.

Advantages: the perfect fit, you will be wrapped airtight, so the same fabric filling and warmth can be optimal.

Disadvantages: achieving the wrapping will lead to a lack of internal space, and the sense of bondage is more obvious. Like to sleep in the big show will feel suffocated.

3. Measure the temperature

As soon as we get our bags, we see the temperature label prominently on the packaging. There are two labels: comfort temperature and limit temperature. A comfortable temperature is a temperature that makes you comfortable. The temperature limit is the coldest temperature that keeps you from freezing to death.

There are two general marking methods. The first is to label the sleeping bag's comfortable low temperature directly. Like -10˚C or something, easy to understand. The second is to mark a range (some will then add color).

If red starts at 5˚C, it becomes light green at 0˚C and dark green at -10˚C. Then this range is the temperature at which we feel most comfortable during sleep. That said, the sleeping bag is hot at 5˚C, 0˚C is just right, and -10˚C is the extreme temperature at which you feel cold. So the comfortable low temperature of this sleeping bag is 0˚C.

The selection of a sleeping bag is affected by many environmental factors. Such as the local humidity and camping location, the use of a moisture-proof pad is also a very important reason.  So you should choose the comfortable temperature marked on the sleeping bag according to external factors.

Sleeping bags can't be chosen based on a few simple metrics. Quality sleeping bags are carefully designed in terms of materials and construction. There are a few general directions to follow when choosing the sleeping bag you need. Choose products made by EN/ISO manufacturers. Materials and metrics are then selected based on the use scenarios and budgets they typically involve. The right fit is the best, quietly enjoy the mountains, give and take.
